When is the best time to visit the Maldives?

Getting to know the seasons of the Maldives

posted 02/10/2026 by our Travel Expert Sofia
Turquoise lagoons, powder-soft beaches and overwater villas make the Maldives one of the world’s most sought-after tropical destinations. But while these Indian Ocean islands enjoy warm temperatures year-round, the weather can vary depending on when you visit. In this guide, I’ll explain the best time to visit, including Maldives weather by month, seasonal differences and the best months for surfing, diving, snorkelling and wildlife encounters.

Maldives weather: What to expect throughout the year

From December to March, the gentler north-east monsoon ensures warmer, calmer and much drier weather across the Maldives. You can expect around eight or nine hours of sunshine per day, with daytime temperatures remaining comfortably around 30°C. This is peak holiday season in the Maldives and usually extends well into the shoulder month of April.

From May onwards, there’s a higher likelihood of rainfall. Temperatures still regularly exceed 30°C but the combination of strong sunshine and high humidity can feel quite oppressive at times. During this rainy season, the south-west monsoon brings short but intense tropical downpours. However, these showers usually pass quickly, with sunshine returning soon after. Expect around seven hours of sun a day.

November is another shoulder season so there’s still a chance of rainfall and some unsettled weather. However, this normally doesn’t last too long and, thanks to the consistently warm sea temperatures (usually between 27°C and 29°C throughout the year), you can still enjoy a dip in the sea and some time on the beach.

Choosing the best month to visit the Maldives

Whatever your holiday goals, you’ll find the Maldives offers the ideal weather sometime during the year to pursue your interests – from exploring above or below the waves, spotting marine life in their natural habitat, or just relaxing on the beach or by your own private pool.

Experiencing the thrill of surfing, snorkelling & diving

The best time for water-based activities in the Maldives depends on what you want to do. For snorkelling and diving, the dry season from November to April typically offers calmer seas, excellent underwater visibility and plenty of sunshine, making it ideal for you to explore coral reefs and colourful marine life.

If you’re into chasing some of the best waves in the Indian Ocean, consider a surfing break to the Maldives sometime in the rainy season, particularly in May or June. Many of the country’s most famous surf swells are found in South Malé Atoll, which attracts experienced surfers.

Encountering the Maldives’ diverse marine creatures

The Maldives is considered one of the world’s best destinations for wildlife encounters, with opportunities to spot manta rays, sea turtles, dolphins and countless species of tropical fish throughout the year. While sightings are never guaranteed, the rainy season between May and November often brings nutrient-rich waters to the atolls that attract larger marine species such as whale sharks, reef sharks and eagle rays.

Our tip: One of the best places to encounter manta rays is Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll, where large groups gather tto feed on the abundant plankton.

Relaxing in the sunshine on the beach

If your dream Maldives holiday revolves around uninterrupted sunshine, turquoise lagoons and long days on the beach, the dry season is generally the best choice. Between December and April, the Maldives enjoy lower rainfall, lower humidity and more consistently sunny weather. These months are particularly popular for couples, honeymooners and travellers looking for perfect conditions for a relaxing getaway.

Holidaying to the Maldives during peak travel times

The Maldives is a popular destination throughout the year, but during peak travel periods such as Christmas, New Year, Easter and the school holidays accommodation is in high demand. During these times, resorts can book up well in advance so talk to your Etihad Holidays Travel Expert as early as possible.

Christmas & New Year

Christmas and New Year are among the most desirable times to visit the Maldives. As December and January are in the middle of the dry season, you should enjoy abundant sunshine, lower humidity, calm seas and some of the year’s best weather conditions. Resorts often host festive dinners, beach celebrations and spectacular New Year’s Eve events, making it a truly memorable time to visit for couples, groups and families.

Easter & school summer holidays

Easter is another popular period for visiting the Maldives and generally enjoys warm temperatures, plenty of sunshine and favourable conditions for snorkelling, diving and water sports. As Easter falls towards the end of the dry season, visitors can often benefit from excellent weather while avoiding some of the peak festive crowds.

The school summer holidays are particularly popular with families, thanks to the longer break and family-friendly resort activities. However, this period falls within the Maldives’ south-west monsoon season, meaning the weather can be more variable.

Our tip: While many guests enjoy fantastic holidays during the summer months, if you want to enjoy the very best weather conditions, you may prefer visiting between December and May.

Shoulder season and the monsoon: Understanding Maldives weather

Many travel guides split the Maldives into a dry season and a rainy season, but we know the reality is far more nuanced than that. Rather than thinking in terms of good versus bad weather, we like to think of it more as predictable versus less predictable weather.

The rainy season: Not as wet as you may think

The Maldives rainy season usually runs from May to October and is associated with the south-west monsoon. Lots of travellers hear the word “monsoon” and immediately conjure up images of relentless rain, flooded streets and weeks without sunshine. But in the Maldives, that’s rarely the case.

The rainy season usually brings a mix of sunshine, passing showers, dramatic clouds and occasional thunderstorms. Rain often arrives in short, intense bursts, and many days still include several hours of bright sunshine.

One word of caution: Weather patterns can vary, and some periods may see longer spells of rain or overcast conditions, particularly during the peak of the south-west monsoon.

The shoulder season: The best of both worlds?

Sitting between the two main monsoon periods, April and November are commonly referred to as shoulder season. These months often offer an appealing balance of reasonably good weather, lower prices and fewer visitors.

Conditions during the shoulder months can be a little less predictable than in peak season, but that’s exactly why many of our seasoned travellers love this time of year. You could still enjoy long stretches of sunshine, calm seas and spectacular sunsets while paying significantly less than you would during the busiest months.

When to visit the Maldives – Your questions answered

For travellers focused on guaranteed sunshine, a getaway to the Maldives’ dry season, between December to March, is usually the safest bet. If you prefer fewer crowds and don’t mind the occasional tropical shower, you may find the shoulder season (April or November) or even the rainy season (May to October) offers the perfect Maldives experience for you.
September is often the cheapest month to visit the Maldives, as it falls within the rainy season when demand is lower. You’ll typically find the best deals on resorts and flights between May and October, with September frequently offering some of the lowest prices. While there’s a greater chance of rain, showers are often short-lived and there are still plenty of sunny periods.
