Dhayah Fort, the last remaining hilltop fortress in the UAE, stands as one of the region’s most significant historical sites. From its vantage point, you will enjoy sweeping views of palm groves, the coastline, and nearby mountains. Originally constructed during the Late Bronze Age (1600–1300 BC), the fort has served both as a settlement and a defensive stronghold. It is notable for being the site of the 1819 battle between British forces and the local Qawasim tribes. At the foot of the hill, there is a larger fort that once provided shelter for those who worked and lived among the palm gardens.  

Good to know:

Dhayah Fort is reached by climbing around 243 steps and the ascent is uneven and rocky. Therefore, it is not suitable for visitors with prams, in wheelchairs or using other mobility aids.

This abandoned pearling village is one of the UAE’s best-preserved heritage sites, featuring coralstone houses and old mosques. Al Jazeera Al Hamra means “The red island” and is a favourite spot for photographers and anyone interested in traditional Gulf life before the oil era. Wandering the village’s quiet lanes feels like stepping back in time to the 16th Century when pearling shaped the region’s economy and culture.

Explore Ras Al Khaimah’s shoreline on a coastal boat tour and enjoy its natural beauty. It’s a relaxing and scenic way to experience the emirate from the water. This archaeological site, commonly referred to as the Queen of Sheeba’s Palace, consists of ancient ruins believed to date to the pre-Islamic era. Unfortunately, the association with the Queen of Sheeba arises from local folklore rather than established historical or archaeological evidence – but it is nevertheless worth a visit. Situated on an elevated rocky outcrop that overlooks the surrounding area, the palace ruins provide valuable insights into early settlement patterns in the region. Although only the foundations are preserved, the site maintains an air of intrigue, making it a significant destination for those interested in history and archaeology.

Ras Al Khaimah’s desert is ideal for dune bashing, quad biking, camel rides, and traditional Bedouin‑style evenings, with options ranging from group tours to private safaris. Alternatively, the UAE’s highest mountain peak, Jebel Jais, offers hiking routes, viewpoints, and cooler temperatures, making it a must‑visit for an outdoor adventure. And of course, thrill seekers will love flying over Jebel Jais’ dramatic canyons at speeds of up to 160 km/h on Jais Flight, the world’s longest zipline.

There are no direct flights from the UK to Ras Al Khaimah. Most travellers opt for a seven-hour flight to Dubai followed by a car transfer, which typically takes less than ninety minutes. Depending on the season, Ras Al Khaimah is only three or four hours ahead of the United Kingdom, minimizing the likelihood of significant jet lag.

British and Irish citizens qualify for a visa on arrival. This visa permits a stay in the United Arab Emirates of up to thirty days.

If you are considering a short stay in Ras Al Khaimah, we recommend you plan at least 5 days so that you do not miss the main sights and attractions, such as the majestic Jebel Jais, the highest peak in the UAE, or the tranquil waters of the Arabian Gulf.

Taxis are readily available and reasonably priced, providing a flexible and comfortable way to travel between your hotel and the major attractions. Uber also provides chauffeur services in Ras Al Khaimah and surrounding areas. In most cases, drivers speak English fluently. Alternatively, Ras Al Khaimah operates a bus network that connects all major areas, including tourist sites, shopping centres and residential zones

Ras Al Khaimah climate is characterized by its arid, desert conditions. This means summers are extremely hot with temperatures above 40°C, although evenings are typically cooler. In contrast, the winter months are much milder with average daytime temperatures around 20°C to 25°C. We therefore recommend planning your Ras Al Khaimah holiday between October and April, when conditions are ideal for exploring the outdoors in comfort.

Ras Al Khaimah is an Islamic emirate and most of the inhabitants are very traditional. The city is known for its low crime rates but, as in any other city, you should always be aware of your surroundings and personal safety.

Everyone is expected to dress appropriately out of respect for the local culture. You should therefore wear clothes that cover your body and are not too tight or too short. However, on the beach or within your hotel’s grounds, you can wear your usual swimwear.

While visiting a mosque or other holy sites, women must cover their heads. If necessary, you may also be asked to cover yourself with an additional scarf before entering.

In Ras Al Khaimah, alcohol can generally only be served and consumed in resorts, hotels, and designated tourist areas. It is forbidden to drink alcohol in public and you should be aware there are strict penalties for breaking the alcohol laws.
